Same problem again occurs with 8.10 rc Intrepid release candidate.
Lots of files persistently fail to install with apt-get complaining
about "Hash Sum mismatch". Some package lists fail also, with the same
error reported.
Observation: This problem seems to afflict larger files in particular.

Same problem for me as well. Fresh install of ubuntu eee from the
torrent download. Here is what I get when updating:

Try the command "sudo nautilus", this should open a file browser that
will let you delete the files.

how do i delete those files?
i get an error saying that it can't be moved to the trash
and it says i'm not the owner so i can't change the permissions when I
go to properties.

An "apt-get update" is not sufficient to solve this problem. There is a
corruption in the cached package details delivered by the Live CD.
This problem can be resolved by deleting all files from the following
directories:
/var/lib/apt/lists
/var/lib/apt/lists/partial
