I haven't been using ubuntu much as of late, mostly been working with
freebsd and windows, but last I checked, the nvidia drivers were okay
with ibex

Salvador: it's not easy to tell what caused you problem without seeing
the error you got. Maybe the linux-headers for 2.6.27-4-generic were not

The driver is set to autoinstall itself when the kernel is updated
provided that the kernel headers for the new kernel are available.
Can I see the error you got when you tried to reinstall the driver and

now i have working nvidia drivers with kernel 2.6.27-4
i did this
sudo rm -fR /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/*
uninstall nvidia drivers
install nvidia drivers
reinstall nvidia drivers didn't work, i had to unistall first, and later
install
i think the problem is that nvidia drivers don't recompile when
today i updated from kernel 2.6.27-3-generic to kernel 2.6.27-4-generic
and the nvidia driver (177.76-0ubuntu1) doesn't load in the new kernel,
failsafe mode doesn't work, i can login in gnome only in the previous
kernel, i'm using intrepid alpha 6

Yes, I still have this problem and I believe this must be fixed before
Ubuntu 8.10 goes into Beta with a broader range of users.
I am using a Toshiba Tecra M2 with a GeForce FX Go5200 32M/64M.
I downloaded the ISO file from the daily build of August 29, 2008 in order
to make sure that the

I have tried this, and it has not worked. I only have 177.68 and the
generics in that folder, and have reloaded the kernel 3+ times now. I am
98% certain that this would require something else, since the 3+ times

Like John Yates, I also use the 173.14.12 driver, and I had the same
error when synaptic builds the driver. I also can't run xorg with Driver
nv, which I've heard works for users of the 177-series driver.
Should we open a new bug for this build error?
