Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

xorg.conf is not what it used to be. With automatic detection of
hardware, settings in xorg.conf may be ignored, causing problems. For
instance this is a problem I have just experienced of this kind:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5696425

Beyond that, it is not at all obvious what things like "configured video
device" mean. I spent a good deal of time trying to find the file in
which they were configured, which of course didn't exist.

To remedy this, I suggest that the comments at the top of xorg.conf
should explain very briefly the differences between how X used to get
configured and how it gets configured now, the role of xorg.conf in
that, and where to get further guidance about how to edit the file.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New

it used to
