Please, try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash. (install notably packages 'firefox-3.0-dbgsym' and 'gdb'. You will have a problem of dependency but select the first solution (which does not uninstall ubuntu-desktop) and see here
