I resolved this issue on Lucid by updating my system on safe mode with:
$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Probably was a xorg-core-server update.

Like previous post, this error came up when I rebooted, after install
new linux kernel 2.6.32-10.
