thanks guys for help, fixed!
It was very simple:
in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/ there was a link "libglx.so" to a not existent
old version file. Removing this link, xorg now loads correctly
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.177.76

Thank you for the attention to this issue, I should have posted my
solution to it earlier. I just removed all nvidia drivers, then
stopped gdm and ran the binary installer for the latest nvidia beta.
Works fine. Of course, this means I have to redo this every time the
kernel is upgraded. No worr

in past I installed and removed driver 173.14.12 via nvidia-installer
from website.
By the way I followed ur statements but it doesn't solve it

The log shows that you tried to install driver 173.14.12 with the
installer from NVIDIA's website. That might have corrupted some library.
Press CTRL+ALT+F1 so as to get to the command line.
type:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (or kdm stop, if you use Kubuntu)
cd path/to/the/nvidia installer
sudo s
Hi noticed other 2 problems probably related to nvidia-177:
"hue" value is not set correctly, so I need to launch "nvidia X server
setting" every time I begin to watch a movie cos colors are "strange"
in a movie forms are not "clear" but look like have "aliasing" problem

directory in which you type the command
