This might be related to this behavior (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/245846 ) that I've
seen on my Toshiba laptop with the i386 kernel. The acpi=off also
suppresses the problem, but of course you end up with no ACPI.
I ended up installing the amd64 version, since that

Bug 245846 does seem to have the same underlying issue. The laptop in
question doesn't have a 64bit enabled processor so the amd64 version is
not an option.
