@Mark, since you're using a completely different video card than Markus,
I would suspect your issue is unrelated; please report it as a new bug:
ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-sis.
@Markus, since you're not able to reproduce it, I'm going to go ahead
and close this bug, but if you run across it
@Bryce: I think the problem indeed occured last after an upgrade. So far
it hasn't happened again and I haven't been able to reproduce it on
purpose. Not quite sure, but i think it also happened once when
switching between 8.04.1 and Intrepid (dual-boot), after I tried to
install fglrx on 8.04.
FYI, I've got SiS onboard graphics ( VGA compatible controller [0300]:

[intrepid] Low color resolution on Mobility Radeon X1600 and Desktop Effects
I've noticed it's not uncommon for the first boot after upgrade to
exhibit some odd behaviors that never appear again after that. It
sounds like this may be one of those cases? These bugs prove
notoriously difficult to troubleshoot. If you're able to reliably
reproduce it, or notice the issue
