@Mark, since you're using a completely different video card than Markus, I would suspect your issue is unrelated; please report it as a new bug: ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-sis. @Markus, since you're not able to reproduce it, I'm going to go ahead and close this bug, but if you run across it

@Bryce: I think the problem indeed occured last after an upgrade. So far it hasn't happened again and I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose. Not quite sure, but i think it also happened once when switching between 8.04.1 and Intrepid (dual-boot), after I tried to install fglrx on 8.04.

Same problem here, including the screenshot looks fine when viewed on another display issue. However, in my case, the problem persists after reboot, and even if I boot with kernel 2.6.24-19. Have previously added some details to bug 272933, will reattach here if required. -- [intrepid] Low

Also, I've noticed that it doesn't exactly seem to be low colour resolution necessarily, although at first glance it's a similar effect - many colours display correctly, and I have noticed that on some occasions when restoring from standby the effect is reduced (although still problematic). --

I've noticed it's not uncommon for the first boot after upgrade to exhibit some odd behaviors that never appear again after that. It sounds like this may be one of those cases? These bugs prove notoriously difficult to troubleshoot. If you're able to reliably reproduce it, or notice the issue
