I have switched to Shiretoko (via an Ubuntu PPA) and haven't seen this
problem in the newer version.
I would imagine the problem still exists on Firefox 3.0 though.
Unfortunately, none of the methods suggested by Leann seemed to point to
a way of isolating this I/O problem, so I didn't attempt any

Hi John,
I'm reassigning this to firefox for now. If you entire system would
lock up I'd blame the kernel, but if it's just Firefox at the moment,
I'm suspecting it's related directly to the app. Please take a look at
