OK, can you send create a sparse e2image dump file of the filesystem, using e2image -r? i.e: e2image -r /dev/sdb /var/tmp/sdb.e2i You might also want to make a copy of the file, and try running e2fsck on the file. If the USB drive is going bad, it could be that writes aren't reliably making it
