After creating an xorg.conf file and modifying /etc/pam.d/common-auth,,
pressing return is no longer necessary.
However, the fingerprint scanner just plain does not work with some
things, gnome-screensaver and gksudo being two of them.
This is with an up to date ubuntu 8.10 install on a Lenovo X6
I confirm this.

I have the same problem (I have T61). I have to press Enter after
swiping. That's stupid and i don't know why it doesn't work as in Hardy.

thx polpotak. This does seem to be the case. I can now use thinkfinger
in gdm again too.

On my system (thinkpad R60, Ubuntu 8.0 beta) authentication (at least
sudo) via thinkfinger works BUT you have to press enter after swiping
your finger (which makes the whole process rather annoying).
relevant lines in my /etc/pam.d/common-auth look like this:
authsufficient pam_thinkfing
