This appears to be a duplicate of Bug 279187. Try removing the splash
option from /boot/grub/menu.lst and see if that fixes the problem.

This is happening to me too with the newer kernel (after upgrade from
kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. I can reboot a couple of times and it does not
happen. When it does happen, the machine boots extremely slow.

I got this too. Not all kernels do this though. Todays update
(24.9.2008) made system beep forever again, even though I have
blacklisted pcspkr and snd_pcsp. I had to physically unplug the pc
speaker to make my system usable again.
