of course it is not STRG+U but STRG+SHIFT+U (like formatting bold
characters with STRG+SHIFT+F).
The problem is even bigger: The marked/highlighted text isn't only
replaced by an underlined 'u', this special 'u' reacts very
strange/buggy for example to a line-change and can hardly be del
