Hmm, decided to revisit it and I think I must have made a mistake in the
build as I've done a clean build with an ubuntu 2.6.27 config and can
confirm that the hang on boot is still there.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for testing the upstream kernel, that's great and extremely
helpful. Just a few questions. . . I'm curious if you can build the
upstream kernel with the 2.6.27 config and verify it still works for
you? I just want to make sure this wasn't caused by some kernel config
changes that
Since I had nothing better to do this evening I hopped over to
kernel.org and grabbed 2.6.27-rc8 and compiled it using the .config from
my running kernel (2.6.26.5)
Well this has worked perfectly and booted first time.
What now???

Managed to test the i386 kernel image and it hangs elsewhere. Sorry, no
digital camera handy at the time.

I tried noapictimer and alas it crashes so quickly I cant even grab a
screenshot.
The kernel build unfotunately is i386 and I am on an Amd 64 platform.

Hi Mike,
Hrm, there really isn't any glaringly obvious errors printed to the
screen when it hangs. I'm not sure if this may be related but I've seen
a few reports mentioning the boot will hang, but if they boot with
'noapictimer' they can at least do a few key presses when the machine
hangs and i
