This problem appears to be resolved in Kubuntu 8.10 Release candidate.
The boot process now starts kdm and KDE 4.1 does display - not with the
best (1024x768) resolution for the savage chip, but with with an
adequate resolution (800x600). This can probably be resolved by an
adjustment in xorg.conf
I have downloaded and run Intrepid Beta. Same result, the LiveCD does
not function. At best I get a flashing cursor and the machine goes
quiet. I also tried the installer on the Beta version, with the same
result - flashing cursor, quiet machine.
