If you read all the comments on original bug then you will find few
comments (including mine) telling about totem problem while playing
files. The root cause is some problem with pulseaudio.

How did thias get determined to be a duplicate? I reported TOTEM would
not play media files. and now all i reaD ABOUT IS i have no sound no
sound.

This bug is actually in gstreamer. When pulseaudio is not running,
gstreamer fails to fall back on a different output, regardless of the
output sink selected in the GNOME preferences. That results in Totem's
inability to play anything, printing out the message
