Yes, you're right of course. My problem was simply that the admin user
(created in Gutsy I think) was not member of lpadmin :( which is a
different bug. World-readability is enough, to be precise.

744 is fine in intrepid, it has a patch to only check for world-
executability.

This is not fixed on upgrades: After upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid
using the update-manager release upgrade, the file permissions were 0744
on http, lpd, ipp (and serial but that looks correct).

I tested the intrepid-proposed .debs on my wife's computer, and these
backends appear now in "lpinfo -v" and detect the printer. Printing
works fine.

Intrepid Ibex Release still suffers from this bug.
No custom config changes, default installation. No IPP/HTTP printers accessible.
If you cannot use your network IPP enabled printer,
chmod 0755 /usr/lib/cups/backend/*
It took a while to find out why I can't print on our Xerox WorkC
I'm conforming this bug as of 10/03/2008.
