CD. I also encountered this error and was unable to continue.

I am still facing the problem with latest CD image - 5th Oct. Tried upgrading
old image with jigdo but the new one still has supposedly malformed Release
file.
And the packages on CD image are 'not' available for upgrade.

The best course of action is probably:
1. re-add the uncompressed Package information in the CD Release file
2. apply the patch in apt-pkg/indexcopy.cc (r1615) to the apt in hardy and move
it to hardy-updates
3. add a prerequisites (or a python workaround) to update-manager so that it

I have another upgrade path which fails.
I am already using intrepid and wanted to upgrade using latest image mounted in
a directory. This is what I generally do.
I am not using CD but the image directly and have file:// url in sources.list.
I get following warning
