This was on the Intrepid Beta. Just in case it was a quirk with my
installation, I'll try reburning the iso, reinstalling and I'll see if
I'm still getting the problem.

OK, so apparently the issue still exists then. Which particular driver
version did you install? It's a known bug (bug 251107 and bug 270846)
that versions 71 and 96 don't work with intrepid. If you manage to
reproduce the problem, it would be interesting to get the output of
apt-cache show
