Actually 2.6.27-6 does not fix this. It appears to be the v86d package.
I had installed it about the time the kernel upgrade occurred. I removed
this and I have performed several cycles and have not had a problem.
With v86d the behavior varies, sometimes I get the white screen,

I can confirm a similar problem with 2 NVidia Geforce GTX 280 in SLI
configuration. The problem occurs with kernels 2.6.27-6 and 2.6.27-5 as
well as 2.6.27-4. When using the splash kernel-paramter (v86d is
installed), the screen turns black shortly after the booting of the
kernel starts and stays
