Same issue in Ubuntu Jaunty.
I have a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro (fglrx drivers)
Can't switch user or login in a new window on my current session.

I fixed this issue by reconfiguring xorg.
try running the following:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and see if it solves the issue.

I am also having this problem, typically when I wake my computer up from
suspend. The system starts up with a password screen for the user who
was active when the machine was suspended. That person can log in, but
the switch user button just causes the system to go back to the
screensaver, with

hello. this have started to appear today or yesterday. ubuntu 8.10 cd,
all upgrades are installed, video card is nvidia fx5200, its firm driver
is not installed. have not edited xorg conf.

now it works again: when i press -menu-system-end session..- switch
user it normally goes to the bright brown login screen. when did not
work it did not go there but said error message.
[just] before that bug started what was: a little update with nearly 6
packages and i(we) first time used guest
i have an idea. i have found that i probably have blocked ports from
localhost to localhost. does xorg make local connections with ports? of
so which ports does it use? but i can allow all local and it already
started to work somehow, after some time we used to log out and log in
for every user
I have also observed this on my system. I have noticed that I am
sometimes able to get it working by typing in an incorrect password from
a locked screen. However, this is largely unreliable.

I still have the same issue, on an old Sony VAIO, running Xubuntu
(8.10).
Shutdown, log out switch user have always been a bit buggy (tending to
go halfway, then freeze with just the wallpaper and cursor showing,
especially in lomem situations), but since upgrading to Intrepid
shutdown and log

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
