same issue with Acer Aspire 5100. a few months ago at least the mic was
still in sound preference even though it didn't work. after some updates
i'm not sure which, it completely disappeared.

Similar issue - using a Gateway Lt2005U (Acer is mother company of Gateway)
External Mic works fine
Internal Mic does not work well - if I adjust sound settings to amplify @ 100%
and then record I can get something @ low quality.
I'm not a developer/expert by anymeans - but please let me know if

audio appears in System Prefences/Sound/Hardware (analog stereo duplex)
but the levels indicator, and Sound Recorder, only show even noise. Some

issue is painful when you can't keep everything with you (external mics
included), e.g. in conferences...

Marking this Fix Released for Karmic 9.10 since it will target the
2.6.31 kernel and has most recently be rebased with the 2.6.31-rc2
upstream kernel. Images are currently available for testing -
