It appears that the sidebar creates a user copy of it's desktop files, which
has the disadvantage that it doesn't know about the changed URL in KDE 4.
While in KDE 3 the URL file:$HOME worked perfectly fine, in KDE 4 it is
necessary to use ~ as URL. Ultimately the sidebar would

As Jonathan suggested this probably is an incompability between KDE 3
and KDE 4, I am not sure what we can do about it. But maybe that file
brings some light into the darkness.

Meanwhile I discarded my old system and did a clean install of kubuntu 8.10,
because of many many minor annoyances. In this process I also removed my .kde
directory to clean the configuration. This solved the problem for me.
The file you refer to is a directory. I attached a tarball of it.
