Both my Jaunty installations are working correctly now: I don't have a
blank theme choice in the drop-down combo list, and the sounds play
correctly.

Sound is now working - I had to run alsamixer from the console to raise
the PC and front speaker levels (gnome-volume-control no longer gives
you control of these and the sound is inaudible on my PC with the
default settings).
gnome-volume-control by default shows a blank theme and you can't choos
Unfortunately, sound doesn't work at all in my jaunty installations,
either on the native one or the virtualbox one. On the native one, I can
only run gnome-volume-manager as root, and none of the sounds play.

Same thing is happening here. The Sound Preferences applet loses its
mind when any change to the Sounds theme is made. Sounds will only play
if there is an unmodified "Ubuntu" Sounds theme loaded.
I think I've found the problem - gnome-sound-properties was displaying a
blank sound theme in the drop-down combobox.
The updated gnome-sound-properties in gnome-control-center
1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu5 wasn't even remembering the sounds I set - on re-
opening, it said:
