Success! Ubuntu 9.04 alpha5 loads an ath5k driver which operates my
chip, and network manager can make a WPA2 connection to my linksys
router.

I just tried the Fedora 10 live KDE CD, and it's the first Linux which
has managed to do WPA2 off my Toshiba laptop out of the box, with no
adjustments. So I'm feeling optimistic about Ubuntu 9.04 next spring.

I'm connected, with the following changes. I'm not sure if all of them
are necessary.
1) upgraded to ubuntu kernel 2.6.27-8
2) installed the madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6 drivers from svn.madwifi.org along
the lines advocated by "Rbchound" in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964331
3) removed CC
With the linksys router configured for disabled wireless security, no
ESSID broadcast, and the following wpa_supplicant.conf file, things
work:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ap_scan=2
network={
ssid="Enchanted Forest"
key_mgmt=NONE
id_str="home-nosec

I appreciate all the followup you are doing on this. As I have time,
I'll try to offer a better diagnosis. The intrepid release candidate
i386 live CD doesn't recognize the wifi chip, so I'm still looking at an
ndiswrapper scenario. A naive try at downgrading just the wpasupplicant
