I've installed 2.6.33 from the mainline ppa https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds so I can have a play with ATI KMS but it seems to have solved these (and my other) issues with PATA drives on VIA chipsets. I went and tested a vanilla 2.6.29.1 kernel, and the problem still exists there. it isn't triggered by suspend or resume, as it's been affecting my server box, and I certainly don't use suspend and resume on that. I've got the same problem on jaunty with three machines with Via k9t890/k8m890 chipsets. ATAPI drives will work after boot but sometime after disappear (after suspend/resume?). It's incredibly annoying to have to restart the computer to mount a cd, especially given this problem didn't exist before
