Additional notes: It just happened again. compiz was enabled. (red herring?) gconf-editor showed that /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/left_handed is true (as does gnome-mouse-properties). This resets leftiness: $ gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/left_handed --type boolean
