completely forgot i had this bug open. It started working again (without
me changing anything) about 2 months ago. The firmware had been
installed and then printing stopped working after a cups update. Doesn't
matter anymore though...

Thank you for your bug report. Could you please attach your
/var/log/messages? This might be an Apparmor issue, so could you try
with the Apparmor profile in complain mode. To do this:
sudo aa-complain cupsd

tried using apparmor in complain mode. nothing seems to have changed
(would i have seen the result as my printer working, or would something
show up in a log file?)
on a different note, the program that is using the cpu is 'sed'
in the system monitor, it says the command running for sed is: sed
