Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

i am tryin to run C programs on my ubuntu.
but they cant be compiled n r showin me errors as shown in the attachments.
i tried the command "sudo apt-get build-essential" on terminal
so that i can download the header files but still not workin.
and sayin  "E: Invalid operation build-essential"
pls help me out and tell how to resolve it.
