Specifically, this was fixed in 6.2.13. From

MGR: Fix the application name for both views. (NOTE: the data type 'char'
should NOT be used within the various views. This is the classic example of how
direct data access messes things up in projects
This bug appears to be related to another bug I've seen, where the
"Applications" column in the "Tasks" tab in Advanced View shows boxes
with X in them (null bytes?) after the application name. I grabbed the
latest version of BOINC from boinc.berkeley.edu and no longer get error
messages or Applica
