I had been using kmail standalone. I just ran it from kontact and got

Which kinds of mail folders do you use? IMAP, CachedIMAP, POP3, mBox,
other?
If you use more than one, can you then please try to disable one/more of
them to determine if it is seems to be related to having a certain type
of account open?
