Hi Laura,
My guess is that you are hitting bug 263059, which as you can see
is quite well know, but unfortunately no-one really seems to know
the cause yet.

the splash screen then it will
I've just shutdown and booted 3 times without splash and quiet but, of
course, now it's booting without any problem! I'll keep trying and
making a note of when it does happen.

Hi,
If you get the grub menu (with the list of kernels to choose from)
and press "e" you will be given a screen to change boot options.
If you go to the long line (probably the second of four) and press
"e" again you will be given a cursor to edit the options. All you do
is find and delete "splash
