I believe the problem was tied to the sound card. After the reinstall
of the system, I still had the same problems. I pulled the sound card
and went back to the onboard audio. This took care of the problems.

Thanks Erik... those other bugs gave a bit more insight on where to look
into possible problems. However, this still has not fixed the issue I'm
having. Tomorrow I'm going to reinstall from scratch and see if I can
track down what I did wrong.
On a side note, I have been able to get pulseaudio
I had a similar problem. There was a partial workaround to get sound working

I tried to fix this issue by following the guide posted by psyke83
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5435969postcount=1). No change
in the results after rebooting the system. Included in this post is my
output of lspci and my sources.list.
