Yes, I was eventually able to install 8.10. I don't remember exactly
what happened. I think a later version worked.

Would it be safe to assume that there was a possible problem with the
disk itself? I'm considering closing this bug because of how long it's
been without other reports of problems with this install.

You can close it, but it was actually a problem with the installer that
had been resolved. I think the other related bugs might have more info.
