Same problem with Ubuntu 9.04. After resume issuing "killall pulseaudio
&& pulseaudio" fixes it.

OK, meanwhile i found another "solution" for my issue:
simply move a gnome-volume-control-slider!
sound reappears afterwards for me, although the volume-slider wasn't set to 0%
before.

I have the same problem on my Lenovo T61. The suggested "sudo alsa
force-reload" restores sound for me as well.

Standby Mode.
