The volume setting is not 0 - above solution didn't change a thing.
(alsamixer -Dhw)
In contrast to post from 2008-10-25 there's no sound now.

Stuation got more complicated - if I change the display manager zu gdm from kdm
sound is working again.
Same machine, same kernel as above.
