This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?
If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under
Adding this to my xorg.conf, solved my problem:
"Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection"
But now with the last NVIDIA and Ubuntu updates, i removed this section,
and system still runs fine.

My problem is definitely not with permissions. But so what is my
problem? I will do a lot of tests to discover what is the problem. To
you guys I have a tip to change the gid. Run this, gedit /etc/modprobe.d
/nvidia-kernel-nkc.conf, and change the gid to what you want.

I don't think this is NVDIA Settings fault. The problem is with the
module creation and configuration itself, and probably with the
distribution. And not with a poor screen configuration tool.

peter,
Your tip worked. I had been using "chown 0666 /dev/nvidia*" for a while, but it

Thanks for the help,

At my computer
/dev/nvidia and

had the GID 44, but looking into /etc/group I saw, that the "video" group had
the GID 1003 (and I am sure i never changed anything there). And
was of course part of the group "video" (=1003) but

Hi adamc,
Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
