The system gets stuck while rebooting/shutting down, displaying 'acpid exiting'.

I concur that this is not a duplicate, FWIW.
My read of this (288863) bug is that the failure mode is that the
computer fails to shut down, the last thing displayed is "acpid
exiting."

Just another note: if I switch to a non X session (e.g. TTY1) during
shutdown, it appears to be 'hanging' during 'Shutting down ALSA...'

This is also affecting one of my machines (amd64). Upon
shutdown/restart, shutdown sequence appears to 'hang', goes to a blank
screen (flashing cursor in upper left corner of screen), after 2-3
minutes displays message 'acpid Exiting.', then procedes to
shutdown/reboot normally.

Does the other bug have anything to do with "acpid: exiting" showing
up after trying to reboot? It will hang like this for a while and then
the reboot will happen.

I got this bug in a Toshiba Tecra M5389 (Ubu 8.10 AMD64), my colleague got it
in a generic desktop with a PIII processor.
I've seen thousands of reports all over the web, this should be treated with
maximum urgency, and it looks very serious to me.
