Oh btw, I'm using ubuntu LTS 8.04 an VirtualBox 2.1.2, i'm running
virtualbox as non-root and verified that all files in ~/.VirtualBox are
owned by me.

I can confirm this behaviour.
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest version of VB
(2.1.0). I was not able to capture my mouse until I checked the box not
to show the dialog any longer and then clicked the "Capture"
button. Now it works as expected.
(I am running this on a Dell D
I'm running PCLinuxOS 2007 under an Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit host in
VirtualBox 2. I see this as well. Unchecking the "Don't show the message
again" box fixes the issue.

I am seeing exact same with 8.10 64bit Ubuntu as Host.
I disabled the popup and it properly captures now.
The guests I have tesed with same results are: FC 9 and 10

Just to get a really clean environment to test, I burned the latest
Intrepid daily LiveCD ISO available to me (20081028.2) and booted into
it (twice actually; the first time was to verify that the disk was a
good copy and it said it was :). I then installed virtualbox-ose from
universe* (2.0.4-dfs
I cannot reproduce this using 2.0.4:
I've re-enabled the popup dialog (by removing the """ExtraDataItem
name="GUI/SuppressMessages line from VirtualBox.xml) and when clicking into
a Ubuntu Intrepid virtual box (without guest additions AFAIK), the mouse gets
captured as expected when clicking
