I too am getting this issue with fully updated Intrepid. At school,
there are many access points all with the same name. Many places on
campus have multiple access points in range with that same name. They
require web authentication with every reconnect, which makes wireless
hard to use.

I'm definitely still getting the periodic_update()s
It's not as frequent (for me) as when I originally logged the bug. It
now happens about 5 times a day (working hours). At 5 times a day it's
annoying, but not unworkable.
It's horribly annoying if you're doing something like Internet Banking,
I am currently running into the exact same issue on 8.10 Intrepid with
all patches up-to-date. At home I run 2 cisco aironet 1100's (1 master
and the other as a repeater). Every few mins I lose my connection for a
few seconds because its roaming to the other AP.
