the ssid is set to "not broadcast" in your router/AP. thats how it
becomes hidden. if thats the case your ssid wont show up at all in the
applet until NM receives a reply from that AP.

I don't even know how to make the ssid hidden, so I take it its not. It
does show up in the connection settings yes.
