As far as getting it working on Intrepid, did you also try reinstalling
mesa? Maybe I should also add that for the aggressive method:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri

Thanks for your efforts with Ubuntu!
The Jaunty driver seems to work from the live CD. I played the ogv file
from the Examples directory and also a wmv file (having installed a
codec) and both played ok. I do get quite a bit of tearing but that's
another issue. I will look into it a bit more
First, doublecheck that you don't just have stray -fglrx bits installed

Next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest Jaunty to make sure the issue still happens there
