gdm supports a 'reload' option that can be used to force gdm to re-exec
itself only after the last open session is closed. If wdm adds support
for this, then we can invoke wdm's init script in the same way.

What is the behaviour of libpam0g when you run gdm? I guess gdm is not
restarted or at least not in a way that would kill the x11 session and
thus the upgrade process.
If there is an exception in the install process for gdm (or kdm) than
there should be a similar exception for wdm
Yes, libpam0g will deliberately restart wdm on upgrade; but it will only
do this if the user explicitly confirms that wdm should be restarted, or
if the user has disabled debconf from ever prompting during an upgrade.
Sorry, but this restart needs to be done for the reasons stated in the
debconf pr
term.log seems to show the dist-upgrade configuration of libpam0g
deliberately stopping wdm.
