Happened since Intrepid I believe. Seems odd it would regress across 2
distros. 9.04 x86 as well

Was about to report this myself, so I'll chime in and say I can confirm
it too for version 9.04 (x86).

Everything is confirmed for version 0.61.2ubuntu10 (the one I am running
on Intrepid):
1. There seems to be no default column sorting.
2. There seems to be no setting for such a thing.
3. The sorting gets lost only when some text is in the Quick search field.
--
user sort criteria lost when
It is as if the default sort order (A-Z by Package Name) only applies
when not searching and searching uses it's own sorting order.
I suspect that the search module is not sending the search results
through any sorting routines and is instead returning things in the
order in which they are found.
I can confirm this problem.
This also applies to selecting packages for removal.

user sort
This problem is more complex than my steps to reproduce above -- it is
triggered only when there's text in the quick search box. I apologize for the
erroneous report. Please try this:
- launch Synaptic
- enter c-cran in Quick search
- sort by Supported
- select treeviewx
- sort criteria are lost
