Public bug reported:

Sometimes I've problems with an external harddrive. On startup this causes
ubuntu to stop booting and to display the "maintenance shell". On 8.04 i could
resume booting by pressing Ctrl+D. This is no longer working. In fact my system
does not react to any normal inputs. Only some unusual keycombinations like
Ctrl+F trigger some kind of reaction (displaying something like "[^F"), most
other keys including [RETURN] are just ignored.
The only way I see to get out of this is by rebooting.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
