It still freezes.
But nor the syslog or kern.log say anything about Pidgin. But when the
freezes happens this is what it says in syslog:
Nov 7 12:48:40 daniel-laptop kernel: [42452.733109] CE: hpet increasing

If it still freezes, can you search into the kern.log, syslog, ... some
information that may be interesting.

can you give the ~/.xsession-errors file, and can you search into
system->admin->system logs-> syslog and kernlog informations about pidgin
(segfault, error messages,...)
