I'm not sure if upstream will really consider this to be a bug since the
way it is working seems to be the same way it works for other text
attributes/changes.

Hmm, you speak the truth!
Definitely occurs regularly for me, maybe when the doc is saved as .doc or has
previously been edited in Word (footnote inserted in Word rather than OOo)?? I
do quite a lot of editing in both.

Can confirm here in the latest Karmic build.
When working on a .doc file (probably not important)
To reproduce:
Write a sentence, and put a footnote at the end (make sure there are no spaces
after it)
Press return and type another sentence.
Backspace this sentence (twice - since I have a first-lin
