Public bug reported:

Happens systematically on Thinkpad X40 upgraded to latest Kubuntu 8.10:

Playing a video causes the screen to go dark. The video starts to play
and after a few second the screen goes black. The backlight is still on
but nothing is shown on the screen. The computer is otherwise working
normally - the movie continue to play sound. Restarting Xorg does not
reset the screen. The computer must be rebooted to recover working
video.

Note that same equipment was running Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE3 without
trouble. Have tried with mplayer, Kaffeine, and get the same results.

There are other issues with video, possibly related:

* On resume, the backlight does not back come on. This issue has already been
reported on Launchpad.
* Xorg randomly dies, taking me back to a console (and then restarting), as if
I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Any work in progress is lost.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
