Sorry that didn't work for you. After reading your bug report I noticed
my pound sign wasn't working either. I went into the keyboard layouts
and my layout was just 'uk', so I clicked Add, got the same or similar
error window as in your screenshot. But I was able to select 'United
Kingdom' and

I think this is a duplicate of bug 67188. Scroll down through the
comments and you should find instructions on how to edit xorg.conf to
get you round the bug.

still refuses to produce pound sign.
