That did the job for me, NOTHING else seemed to work so I was glad this
did.
sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
(Hit the reset confirmation)
and then go to SystemPreferencesSound and change

replace packagename with the correct package name for all the packages above
including flashplugin-nonfree and firefox versions

I installed packages pa-dev-chooser, libao-pulse and libsdl1.2debian-
pulseaudio and that seems to have fixed the problem for me.
